Sore throat- do I need antibiotics?
In most cases sore throats are caused by viral infections which unfortunately do not respond to antibiotics. Only 10% of sore throats are caused by Strep (which is a bacteria that responds well to antibiotic treatment). It is often difficult to tell the difference between Strep and viral infections as even some viral infections get white spots. The best option is to do a swab test. Here at Express Medical we have started offering bedside swab tests. This means that within 10 minutes we can test your sore throat and tell whether antibiotics will be of help to you.
If you don’t need antibiotics there are still things that can help you. We may not be able to treat the cause of the sore throat but there are lots of things that will help treat the symptoms of sore throat. Pain medication like paracetamol and nurofen will help bring down swelling and treat the pain. Sprays and lozenges should help soothe the area also.
Swab tests are now available at a cost of €15 per test + the cost of the consultation. If you need antibiotics they can be prescribed at the time and if you need any other management we will be there to help.
